Twin Brooks Threshing

My first try at using the walking plow. It looks simple but is actually a bit complicated until you get everything down and the horses need to walk down the furrow. After a couple rounds I felt like I had been plowing all of my life. It was Great!!!

The schoolhouse was very interesting to us as Rebecca is a teacher and likes the older traditional schools and school systems. We would like to homeschool our children some day and maybe have a room like this for school time.

Chalk boards are getting to be very scarce now days but are preferred by us.

I took in all of the information on cutting lumber. With the prices these days so high, it would be very beneficial to cut some of our own lumber. These older saw mills work well but are quite dangerous. It is a good thing to be able to see and talk to someone who has some experience as the people doing it that day did.

Butchering Chickens

Andrew and I butchered 6 chickens at the beginning of the month. We had quite a process down for it---Andrew would kill the birds, I would dip them in hot water and start taking the feathers off, Andrew would pull the organs out and spot check it, and TA-DA! Chickens were ready to be bagged and froze.

A work in progress

The finished product!
Tonight we are having chicken for supper. I put one in the crock pot while Andrew was at work...hopefully in a couple of hours, it's ready to eat!

Making hay with real horsepower

On July 28th and 29th at the Paul Dummann farm, there was a scene from the early 1900's. Five teams pulling mowers cut over fifty acres of second cutting hay which consisted of alfalfa and orchard grass.

The best part of the whole day, when Rebecca brought out snacks and gave me some encouragement.

The horses were very happy to take a break for a picture. Paul is on the left, I(Andrew) am next, then Delvin Hansen, Leonard C, and then Lauren.

Rebecca and I are trying to gather wisdom from the "old timers".
